Numerical simulations of the interaction of internal waves with a shelf break

چکیده
The energetics of the interaction of internal gravity waves with a shelf break is investigated by means of high-resolution two-dimensional numerical simulations, with an emphasis on understanding the partitioning of the internal wave energy over the course of the interaction process and the subsequent dynamics of the onshore propagating internal waves. Some of the energy is dissipated as a result of the instabilities associated with breaking, while the remaining energy is either reflected back away from or transmitted onto the shelf. We employ an analysis of the distribution of the energy flux across the shelf break taking into account the contributions from nonhydrostatic as well as nonlinear effects to quantify the percentage of energy flux that is transmitted onto the shelf, as well as the percentages of reflected and dissipated energy fluxes, from an incoming wave field. For a given frequency of an incoming wave, we vary the amplitude of the wave to vary the incident energy flux, and we simulate conditions ranging from subcritical to supercritical slopes by varying the topographic slope angle. The results show that the cumulative transmitted energy flux is a strong function of the ratio of the topographic slope , to wave characteristic slope s, while the reflected energy flux is a strong function of both /s as well as the nonlinearity. The energy flux calculations indicate that the internal boluses that form as a result of the interaction of the incident wave with the slope are very energetic, especially for critical to supercritical slopes. These nonlinear internal waves are plausible candidates for effectively transporting mass onshore, not withstanding their contribution to diapycnal mixing as well. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. On the formation and propagation of nonlinear internal boluses across a shelf break
High-resolution twoand three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed of first-mode internal gravity waves interacting with a shelf break in a linearly stratified fluid. The interaction of nonlinear incident waves with the shelf break results in the formation of upslope-surging vortex cores of dense fluid (referred to here as internal boluses) that propagate onto the shelf. This paper pr...
متن کاملTidal energy conversion in a global hot spot: On the 3-D dynamics of baroclinic tides at the Celtic Sea shelf break
Globally, the Celtic Sea shelf break is ranked highest as an energetic ‘‘hot spot’’ of tidal energy conversion, therefore making it the most significant contributor to global internal tidal energy flux. In this paper, the three-dimensional dynamics of baroclinic tides in the shelf-slope area of the Celtic Sea was investigated numerically and using observational data collected on the 376th cruis...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of the Effect of Bubble-Bubble Interaction on the Power of Propagated Pressure Waves
The study of bubble dynamics, especially the interaction of bubbles, has drawn considerable attention due to its various applications in engineering and science. Meanwhile, the study of the oscillation effect of a bubble on the emitted pressure wave of another bubble in an acoustic field which has less been investigated. This issue is investigated in the present study using the coupling of Kell...
متن کاملModeling Internal Solitary Waves in the Coastal Ocean
In the coastal oceans, the interaction of currents (such as the barotropic tide) with topography can generate large-amplitude, horizontally propagating internal solitary waves. These waves often occur in regions where the waveguide properties vary in the direction of propagation. We consider the modeling of these waves by nonlinear evolution equations of the Korteweg-de Vries type with variable...
متن کاملA model of suspended sediment transport by internal tides
The ability of internal tides to resuspend and advect sediment over continental shelfs and slope regions is investigated by applying an internal wave and sediment transport model. Numerical experiments are carried out, firstly, with the ratio of bathymetry and internal waves characteristics creating critical, subcritical, and supercritical conditions, and secondly, for an observed section of th...
